Measures Aim To Stem Middle East Bird Slaughter (Reuters/Planet Ark)

JOHANNESBURG - Conservationists launched a three-year project on Tuesday to protect millions of migrating birds which are indiscriminately targeted by hunters in North Africa and the Middle East. "The number of migratory birds being killed has increased to an almost industrial scale in some countries ... Hunters kill millions of birds annually as they migrate through the Mediterranean region," British-based BirdLife International said in a statement.

JP Morgan accused of making investments of mass destruction (ForestPress)

Pressure group the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) is targeting US-based bank JP Morgan Chase over its alleged lack of environmental policy. The group has launched an advertising campaign and website to highlight the projects the bank has invested in, which, the group says, are causing major environmental damage.

Tell Chile's government to protect endangered forests! (ForestPress)

Chile's native forests, dominated by the globally rare Siempre Verde (forever green) forest type, include the world's second largest expanse of temperate rainforest, the Valdivian Rainforest. More than one-quarter of the world's remaining temperate rainforests are in Chile. After eons of biological isolation, these forests are home to the world’s oldest surviving tree species (araucaria araucana), the world’s smallest deer (pudu pudu) and the world famous Alerce tree, also known as the “Chilean redwood” (fitzroya cupressoides).

More Than 15,000 Species Facing Extinction - IUCN (ForestPress)

BANGKOK - More than 15,000 species, from sharks to frogs to fir trees, are facing extinction and the total is rising faster than ever before, conservationists and scientists said on Wednesday. Despite efforts to slow or reverse the slide into oblivion of many species, one in three amphibians and almost half of all freshwater turtles are threatened, the IUCN World Conservation Union said at the unveiling of its 2004 species "Red List."

Stevens cool to conclusion of global warming study (The Associated Press)

ANCHORAGE--U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, says he disagrees with a new scientific study's conclusion that the burning of fossil fuels is a major factor in climate change. The study by the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment was commissioned by an international commission with representatives from eight countries, including the United States, as well as six indigenous groups. Scientists who helped put together the report briefed members of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee on Tuesday.

Commission Joint Research Centre assesses Portugal's worst forest fire season (EU Press Releases, Brussels, 27 August 2003) Some 355 976 ha of land had been burnt in Portugal by 20 August 2003, 301 180 ha of which was forest, according to figures derived from satellite observations by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC).

Five people died in a forest fire which ravaged north-eastern Spain and forced hundreds of people to be evacuated from their homes, Catalan regional government sources said.
