California Turns to Goats to Stop Wildfires (Reuters)

From hilly San Francisco to more rural settings, California landowners, business and officials have hired the voracious animals to devour the grass and brush that fuels wildfires.

Forest owners want carbon credits back (Manawatu Standard)

By MARTA STEEMAN Forestry investors are calling on the Government to relinquish carbon credits from forests and allow forest owners to own and trade them They say the Government's embarrassing Kyoto blunder would be solved because forestry would be much more economic with carbon credits and planting would take off again. Plantings after 1990 create carbon sinks, which earn credits.

FAO workshop for nature oriented forestry management (ForestPress)

An opening workshop of FAO/ TCP/ Hungarian Project/3003 (A) was held at the Buják hotel of Hungarian Ministry of Defence, on June 24th 2005. In accordance with the agreement signed on September 8th 2004, FAO will grant a US $ 271,000 project lauched by HM Budapesti Erdõgazdaság Rt. (Forestry of Budapest Co. under Ministry of Defence) for development and enhancement of initiative forest management methods and operations.

European Wood Day in Tokyo 25 October (ForestPress)

The second European Wood Day will be staged in the Yayoi Auditorium of the prestigious Tokyo University this autumn. Cooperation in invitations and arrangements has already been promised by the University and by the Japan Association of Timber Engineering. The conference is arranged by the partners in European Wood. Japanese authorities, architects, specifiers, construction companies and educators will be the prime target groups.

Greenpeace gives Golden Chainsaw to Brazil Tycoon (Reuters)

SAO PAULO, Brazil - Brazilian agriculture tycoon Blairo Maggi, the world's largest soy producer, has been voted winner of environmental group Greenpeace's first Golden Chainsaw award for contributing to Amazon destruction. Maggi, who is also governor of Mato Grosso state, secured 10,348 votes out of 27,849 cast in an Internet poll, Greenpeace said on its Web site on Monday. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was runner-up with 7,314 votes.

Still no political solution to the financial problems of Danish forestry (ForestPress)

Denmark’s private forestry – representing 70 per cent of Denmark’s total afforested area –is in a very bad financial situation. In 2004 the financial result was an average deficit of 500 DKK (70 euro) per hectare of forest. At the end of August the Danish Government will present its long awaited programme for improving the forestry’s financial framework and its long term sustainability. The Government’s report on the financial situation of private forestry constitutes a first step.

Furthermore, the faculty offers courses for training experts at environmental management, forest plants protection and a postgraguate course in nature protection. Besides Sopron, Csíkszereda (Transsylvania) is a training centre of correspondence courses for forestry engineers and wildlife managers.

Sewage could solve Australia's drought (Reuters/The Guardian)

Michael Byrnes in Goulburn The biggest dam, Pejar A severe drought is drying up drinking water across Australia, threatening to shut down big population centres but also creating the conditions for a revolution in water use. Worst hit is the farming town of Goulburn, south-west of Sydney. Its biggest dam, Pejar, currently holds less than 10% of its 1,000 megalitre (220m gallon) capacity. The town will become the first in Australia to run out of water in six months, if it gets no substantial rain and if emergency plans for new water supplies fail to work.

Trees Attacked by Two Moth Species (Associated Press)

Byline: Juliette Wallack Winter moths BOSTON — The destruction is obvious through much of southeastern Massachusetts: Trees stripped of their leaves dot the landscape, leaving mostly brown and gray where green once was. Many of the leaves that have managed to withstand the attack bear evidence of the assault -- tiny bite marks and nibbles. Faced with outbreaks of two moth species known for their steady diet of leaves, experts are working to control the pesky critters and discover what is causing their spiraling numbers and widespread defoliation they leave in their paths.
